My Best Natural History Photographs of 2019
2019 offered opportunities to again dive the chilly waters of Browning Pass at the far northern end of Vancouver Island, photograph the Southern California spring wildflower bloom, travel to Rome, Paris, Iceland and London with my family, dive with whales and sea lions in the fall months, return to a few classic southwestern landscapes and enjoy the coastline of northern San Diego County. Not to mention that I was able to spend time with good friends while chasing images. My favorite photos of the past year are below, roughly in chronological order. This is the 13th year I have done an annual retrospective. My creative goal for any one year is, as it always has been, to shoot 3-4 world-class images and 10-15 portfolio-quality images. If you like these feel free to check out previous years’ favorites as well: 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007. Also, be sure to check out Jim Goldstein’s blog, where he collects the “best of the year” collections of many talented photographers. Thanks Jim! Cheers and Thanks for looking!

Male elephant seals (bulls) rear up on their foreflippers and fight for territory and harems of females. Bull elephant seals will haul out and fight from December through March, nearly fasting the entire time as they maintain their territory and harem. They bite and tear at each other on the neck and shoulders, drawing blood and creating scars on the tough hides. Sandy beach rookery, winter, Central California
